Netflix has released a steady stream of gripping and terrifying true crime narratives in 2019. Abducted In Plain Sight, was an astonishing tale told by a survivor of multiple kidnappings at the hands of a family "friend". Meanwhile, Confessions with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes provided chilling insight into the troubling psyche of Ted Bundy.

Now, an upcoming true crime docu-series is guaranteed to leave you with more questions than answers. A trailer for Netflix's The Confession Killer landed this week and it promises to lead viewers down a road of suspense and bewilderment.

The Confession Killer tells the story of Henry Lee Lucas, a confessed "killer" who admitted to murdering hundreds of individuals. In the early 80s, Henry Lee Lucas confessed, in great detail, to killings all over the United States. Numerous unsolved cases were closed as a result of Lucas' confessions. The only problem? The great majority of these confessions were a hoax.

In the trailer for The Confession Killer, the Henry Lee Lucas saga is laid out as the "biggest hoax in American criminal justice history". Viewers get a snapshot of how Henry Lee Lucas was regarded by the media and the law enforcement professionals who were charged with securing convictions for the gruesome killings he'd falsely confessed to.

Lucas ultimately confessed to killing as many as 600 people and, at one point in the trailer, a broadcaster reveals that as a result of his false confessions "197 cases were closed that should still be open".

Per Netflix's synopsis, "journalists and attorneys found impossibilities in Lucas’ timeline, and DNA testing started to contradict his internationally-reported claims".

"There's not one shred of evidence to show that Lucas killed my mother," says one victim's daughter.
