Tony Stark's sunglasses appear in Spider-Man: Far From Home with a new acronym called EDITH - but what does it mean?

Tony Stark might have died in Avengers: Endgame but if you thought for one second that Iron Man himself would not have left behind a solid, albeit potentially catastrophic, contingency plan to help save the world, you thought wrong.

Spider-Man: Far From Home sees Peter Parker come to terms with the fact that Mr Stark has chosen him – the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man – to pass the almighty torch on to and that power is left to him in the form of Tony's iconic AI sunglasses.

Now, before we get into the spoilers, it's shown in the trailer that Peter Parker somehow comes into possession of Iron Man's glasses. Not much is revealed in that short clip but it's clear that the glasses are the key to some pretty powerful tech that blows Peter's mind.

In the film, it's revealed that the AI glasses are called EDITH which is an acronym that cements Tony Stark's legacy in the future of the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D.

What does the EDITH acronym mean in Spider-Man: Far From Home?

So, what does EDITH stand for? Like JARVIS and FRIDAY, EDITH is an acronym created by Tony Stark himself. Apart from being a classic old lady's name, EDITH literally means "Even Dead, I'm The Hero."

He really did think of everything, huh? Tony created the tech to pass control on to someone worthy in the event that he dies trying to save the world from Thanos. The glasses are handed to Peter by Happy Hogan, who tells him that Tony wanted him to have them specifically. Iron Man might be gone but Tony's brilliant mind still lives on in the form of the AI system and his protégé, Peter.

As for what the EDITH glasses do? EDITH is a tech system that lives within the glasses and is operated by voice control. It is able to identify every single person within the owner's immediate vicinity, read text messages, and delete pictures from anyone's camera roll (which comes in handy when Peter gets caught in a very precarious position). Basically, it can hack into your smartphone and do what it wants.

EDITH also controls a weapons system in space that can launch thousands of deadly drones at the muttering of a word.

We won't reveal the big twist that involves EDITH (major spoilers and that, ya know...) but you can probably see where all that is going. Glasses controlled by a voice? That contain that much power? Carnage. Peter soon becomes very aware of how dangerous the glasses can be when he accidentally calls a drone strike on one of his classmates and doesn't think he should be the one who holds all that power and responsibility.

Things happen, there's a lot of drama but ultimately, it looks like EDITH could be as key to the next phase of the MCU as JARVIS was to Tony.
