Forky is getting his own Disney+ films but will there be a Toy Story 5?

Toy Story 4 may have only just come out but fans are already wondering if the ending means a Toy Story 5 is in the works.

It should come as no surprise that Toy Story 4 is already a huge success. The critically-acclaimed, Pixar film broke box office records as soon as it was released last Friday (Jun 21) with the biggest global opening weekend of any animated movie ever ($238 million). People can't get enough of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the franchise's beloved characters.

In fact, viewers love Toy Story so much that they now want to know if there's any possibility of a Toy Story 5 happening.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Pixar producers Mark Nielsen and Jonas Rivera opened up about if we can ever expect to see a Toy Story 5 film. Discussing Toy Story 4, Nielsen said: "We really worked this story thinking of it as the conclusion of Woody and Buzz's story from beginning to end. We've been so focused on this film that we haven't talked about life beyond this, apart from some short films with Forky we're doing for Disney+."

Nielsen then added: "For the features, if this were the last one, we feel that we would be satisfied as filmmakers that we had told a complete story."

And it's easy to see why Nielsen believes that Toy Story 4 could work as the last film in the franchise. While Toy Story 3 provided us with a neat ending to Andy's story, Toy Story 4 ends Woody and Buzz's story in a way which would seem hard to follow-up.

In Toy Story 4, we see that Woody hasn't adjusted to life with Bonnie as well as the other toys. He is no longer the leader of the group like he was with Andy. When Bonnie takes the toys on holiday with her to a fair, Woody reunites with Bo Peep by chance. In doing so, he decides to stay with her and help lost toys find owners. He bids Buzz and the rest of the toys a tearful goodbye.

The prospect of a Toy Story 5 seems unlikely, seeing as Woody and Buzz are now separated, but Rivera isn't ruling it out just yet: "I think Toy Story is such a great world, such great characters and there's so many new characters that I’d be remiss if I didn't say there was room for someone to crack that open. But that's not our goal."

There's also a chance that Toy Story 5 could be made without Woody and Buzz. "If there's a Star Wars movie without Luke Skywalker, and they're similar, there's such a large world of implied history and toys around the world."

In other words, Toy Story 5 might happen and, until we find out more, we've got those Forky spin-offs to look forward to.
