Vampire Diaries fans, I'm going to need your attention. One of your favourite ex-Salvatore brothers is returning to television in a new Netflix show about vampires, but this time he won't be playing the role of a terrifying bloodsucker. Ian Somerhalder will be playing a vampire hunter in upcoming series V-Wars starring Peter Outerbridge (The Umbrella Academy), Adrian Holmes (Arrow) and Laura Vandervoort (Smallville).

Based on the Jonathan Maberry comic series of the same name, V-Wars stars Ian Somerhalder as Dr. Luther Swann, a scientist who is "pitted against his best friend" Michael Fayne (Adrian Holmes), when a mysterious disease turns him and others into vampires.

Ian Somerhalder's character is up against violent vampires in the thrilling first look at the upcoming series headed to Netflix on 5 December. Season 1 of the drama will have 10 episodes.

In a recent issue of Schön Magazine, Ian Somerhalder revealed his initial apprehension at doing another vampire project. He told the publication that he turned down V-Wars multiple times before his wife, actress Nikki Reed, convinced him to take on the project.

“I said no like three different times. It just didn’t seem like the right move to dial into another vampire show," he explained.

"Once I dove into the books and the comics, I realised the level of I.T. and science in the story. V-Wars isn’t about supernaturals, it’s more about science and society, about relationships and love. It deals with the stuff that we’re all dealing with now: borders, racism, medicine, food, security."

Watch V-Wars on Netflix from December 5.
