OH BOY.

There are a whole lot of fan theories about the true identity of Riverdale's elusive Black Hood. In fact, we've probably collected enough juicy theories to publish a book based on all the highly detailed conjecture we've seen around the internet.

We didn't realise that the most interesting theory about the Black Hood would somehow intersect with a theory about Betty's BIOLOGICAL MOTHER but here we are.

Reddit user lCrackers posted a rather detailed explanation about why Betty's biological mother/ The Black Hood is none other than Penny Peabody.

Okay, stay with us here. You all remember Penny Peabody, right?

She is the official lawyer for the Serpents. In season 2 episode 2, Jughead pays a visit to the woman known as "The Snake Charmer". Audiences have been suspicious of Peabody since FP Jones warned his son to steer clear of her.

lCrackers' theory guesses that Penny Peabody is actually Alice Cooper's half sister and Betty Cooper's biological mother.

"Her motive: Alice took her away from Betty after prove [sic] that the environment in the southside and the conditions in which Penny lived were not right for a baby. Most likely Penny did not resist at the beginning because she still did not mature enough to love a baby, but over time she totally regretted that. Now, Penny wants to prove that the North is not as they paint it, that it is equally full of lunatics and sinners, being not very different from the place where Alice did not allow her to raise her daughter. Penny wants to unseal the pretty facade of the northside, making known and hurting all the sinners there," writes lCrackers.

They also go on to implicate Tall Boy, insinuating that Penny is the puppet master out for revenge against do-gooder Alice. That would explain why the letter addressed to Alice and the one addressed to Betty have different handwriting styles.

As for the Black Hood confirming that they know Betty... "How does Betty know her? Well, Penny had been introduced [sic] herself to Betty in many ways to get close to her somehow. Betty can recognize her face, but she does not know that she is from the south, that her name is Penny or that she is her real mother."

That's a lot of guess work but anything is possible.

Right, let's dissect this.

We DO know that Alice is originally from the Southside. She shed her bad girl persona and moved to the 'burbs to start a nuclear family minus one Chic Cooper. Not much is known about Alice's background or upbringing, which does add a layer of mystery to the story.

We also know that the Coopers are no strangers to well kept family secrets. It would spice things up if Alice and Betty had elaborate back stories linking them to the Southside.

One detail that pours cold water on this theory is that the Black Hood explicitly says they're a man. In the note to Alice the Black Hood writes, "I am the man who shot the adulterer at Pop's." However, there are other theories suggesting the Black Hood could be more than one person.

There is a lot of conjecture in this fan theory but the best ones usually are, like, 67% fanfic, right? Even if this doesn't turn out to be true, we think Riverdale should definitely hire this Redditor because this theory is juicy AF.
