Fans have spotted a 'new' character called 'The Gargoyle Knight' on Riverdale's IMDb page, but who is he? And who plays him?

So far in Riverdale season 3, we’ve already met a ton of new characters (what’s good, Evelyn Evernever?!) but there’s still a bunch of new faces we’ve yet to meet. There’s Laurie Lake (Riley Keough) who is set to appear in episode 7, Gladys (Gina Gershon) and Jellybean Jones (Trinity Rose Likins) who’ll be making their grand entrance in episode 8, Edgar Evernever, the elusive cult leader who’s bound to pop up and ruin our lives at some point and - if IMDb is anything to go by - a mysterious character called the Gargoyle Knight.

As we all know, the Gargoyle King has been wreaking havoc on the town for a while now. The main figurehead of the sinister Gryphons and Gargoyles game has popped up a few times now and it looks like it’ll be a while until we find out who and what it actually is.

But what is the Gargoyle Knight? On the Riverdale IMDb page, an actor called James Challis is credited with playing the role in a handful of episodes - and fans are starting to share their theories.

NOTE: Before we end up going off on a massive conspiracy thread, let me just point out that IMDb is not a *completely* accurate source. Seeing as the actor is credited with being in the same episodes in which the Gargoyle King has appeared, it could just simply be a mistake. The name 'Gargoyle Knight' has not been mentioned in the show so far either.

That being said, let’s speculate anyway, shall we? Who doesn’t love being wrong about everything that’s going on in Riverdale!? Plenty of users on the Riverdale Reddit page have already sleuthed his apparent existence and have come up with some theories of their own.

One theory suggests that the Gargoyle Knight is actually the son of Principal Featherhead (the teacher who died in the flashback episode), exacting his revenge on the town. Others reckon he's a member of the Ghoulies or even a member of the cult. Another theory simply suggests that the Gargoyle Knight is a gatekeeper or bodyguard to the Gargoyle King, someone who acts as the go between between players and the almighty one himself.

There's also chat of him turning out to be the real Charles Smith, which isn't a terrible idea (he's bound to pop up at some point) but like, at what point do we stop speculating that every blondish 20-something white guy that turns up in town is the presumed dead son of Alice Cooper Smith and FP Jones?

While they’re great theories, it might just not be as deep as that. Challis has appeared (uncredited) in episodes 2, 3, 4 and 5, episodes in which we have seen the physical Gargoyle King. There’s also been absolutely no mention of anyone called the Gargoyle *Knight* in any instances where the kids or the parents have played the game - it's only ever been the Gargoyle *King*.

The actor could simply be stepping in to portray the figure in the costume, just like the body double that played the Black Hood in season two. If you can cast your minds back to the start of season two, it turned out that there was an actor listed on Riverdale’s IMDb who was credited with the role of ‘Black Hood’, which led many fans to believe that the Black Hood was actually a character we hadn’t met yet. (Also, in case you didn’t know, Lochlyn Munro who plays Hal Cooper revealed that never actually wore the hood on screen. It was the body double the whole time. That’s why his eyes don’t match. Honestly, I'm still not over it...)

Challis is also set to make an appearance in episode 6, titled ‘Manhunter,’ in which we also know the Gargoyle King appears, but could the Gargoyle Knight also appear? Will he speak? Is he a human? Guess we'll find out soon...

Riverdale returns Wednesday 28 November at 8/7c on The CW.
