RuPaul's Drag Race UK will premiere on BBC Three
It's finally happening! It has been announced that RuPaul’s Drag Race is getting a UK spinoff on BBC Three (Dec 5th). In a video on Instagram, mother Ru announced the news that they were looking for UK queens to take part in the show.
"Hey this is RuPaul and guess what, UK? We are casting for Drag Race! That's right. We are looking for queens, we are looking for show girls for the UK! God save the Queen!
In an interview with The Sun, RuPaul added: "I am beyond excited to celebrate the massive charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent of the Queen’s queens. And before anyone asks, yes, we would be thrilled to have Meghan Markle join us, as we are already preparing a ‘Royal-Mother-To-Be’ runway challenge.”
An "TV source" added: ""It will be filmed in London and casting directors will be searching for the best drag artists Britain has to offer - there'll be a huge budget for costumes and production and bosses are hoping that a star is born. It's really exciting for everyone involved and is expected to draw a lot of new fans to the franchise."
Other details about the show are limited at this stage but Michelle Visage has confirmed that her and Ru will be judges on the show. Writing on her Twitter in response to questions from fans, she said:
"Yes @RuPaul is hosting, it is @RuPaulsDragRace after all....and yes OF COURSE i will be right beside him!" Scream.
guys. yes. of COURSE i am a judge.....i am THE judge!!— michelle visage (@michellevisage) December 5, 2018
As reported by Pink News, RuPaul Drag Race was the most popular television subreddit on Reddit this year, and fans in the UK have been asking for years to have a UK spinoff. Back in 2015 there was a one-off special in the UK to advertise RuPaul's Drag Race on truTV but it was nothing like the show in the US. The only other Drag Race spinoff so far has been in Thailand.
When will RuPaul's Drag Race UK air?
No release date has been announced yet. As they have only just put out the casting call, it is likely that filming will happen in the Spring 2019 and air sometime after that.
Which celebrities will be on the judging panel?
The US version of the show has celebrity guests each week to judge the queens on their performance. No names have been announced so far but there are several names are floating around on people's wishlists on Twitter, the most popular being Gemma Collins (of course).
