Netflix viewers were rooting for Otis and Maeve to get together all season long...

We're still not over how amazing Sex Education is. The brand new Netflix series only came out last Friday but in that time it's already captivated audiences all around the world thanks to its heartwarming humour (the script is iconic), moving storylines (episode five) and talented cast (give Gillian Anderson all of the awards). However, there is one aspect of the show that fans are struggling to process: the ending.

35 hilarious Sex Education memes that are better than... sex

Sex Education follows the story of awkward teenager Otis (Asa Butterfield), who sets up a teen sex clinic with social outcast Maeve (Emma Mackey). Not only that but we see them coming of age alongside Otis' best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and it's wonderful to watch unfold. Throughout the season, it becomes clear that Otis and Maeve have feelings for each other but they never act on them and now fans are upset.

Will Otis and Maeve date in 'Sex Education' Season 2?

Yeah. It's pretty evident from the start that Otis is attracted to Maeve but he thinks that she's out of his league and he never pursues anything romantic with her. Meanwhile, Maeve begins a relationship with head boy Jackson but it falls apart when he realises she loves Otis. She goes to tell Otis but it's too late. Otis has started seeing a girl called Ola and it ends with Maeve seeing them kiss.

Heartbreaking, right?! What's worse is Ola is an icon in her own right so it's hard not to root for her even if you're team Otis and Maeve. Talking to Refinery29, Emma Mackey said: “We left them in a weird place, right? They’ve been through things together and they have this kinship that’s so special, even though they might not fully understand it yet.”

She then added: "There’s something really special there. Who knows, they might be able to form a solid friendship again, despite the old nod to romance, you never know. It’s a very confusing time being a teenager, isn’t it? So much confusion, you don’t know what if being in love is just being infatuated with someone." This sounds ominous.

The show's creator, Laurie Nunn gave a different answer to Thrillist: "I guess with a classic will-they-won't-they they can never really get together but obviously we will wait and see if we do get a series two then that might happen. You never know. But I think that was important to keep it fresh you have to keep introducing new obstacles."

"Ola is a great obstacle but she's also a fantastic character in her own right. Hopefully I think if we've done our job right there should be some people who want Maeve to stay with Jackson and who want Otis to be with Ola forever." This is distressing. We ship Otis and Maeve, Otis and Ola and Maeve and Jackson so... I am confusion.

Here is what the fandom thinks.

In other words, I think we're ALL confusion.

What do you think? Are you team Otis and Maeve?
