Fans are going to have to wait a long time for another season of The Umbrella Academy.

Dear readers, we're sorry to be the bearer of bad news but The Umbrella Academy season two isn’t going to be dropping any time soon.

As expected, the first season of The Umbrella Academy has been a huge success since it dropped on Netflix last Friday (Feb 15). The show has received growing reviews from critics and fans have been delving deep into the stories and theories surrounding the Hargreeves siblings. And yes, there have been memes. Lots of memes.

We won’t include any spoilers in case you haven’t finished the season yet but the show ends with several questions unanswered, leaving the possibility open for future seasons. As with other big shows on Netflix, it seems highly unlikely that they would leave the show on one season, so it’s not a question of if, more like, when will they release season two.

Showrunner Steve Blackman seemed to confirm this in an IndieWire interview with Gerard Way, who wrote the comics on which the show is based, and gave an estimate of when S2 could drop and, erm, we might be waiting a long time.

Currently, Gerard and his collaborator Gabriel Bà have published two volumes of The Umbrella Academy comics. A third volume, Hotel Oblivion, is due to be released this August. In the interview with IndieWire, Gerard says that their goal is to stay ahead of the TV Show: “And since we’re on Series 3 [of the comics], we are now ahead of the show. So that’s a good thing. The idea with the comic is to go right from Series 3, take a three-to-four-month break, then go right into Series 4. That is kind of our schedule to keep us on track. So there is story there and it’s all planned out.”

That’s when Blackman reveals that it takes 18 months for them to film and produce a season of The Umbrella Academy. “It takes us 18 months to do a season” he told Way. “I’m sure you’ll be on Volume 5 or 6 by the time we get to the next one.” Way disagreed, saying that “No, we’ll be halfway through 4”, meaning the show could very well take over the comics.

Thankfully, Way said that there is an 18-page document which plots out the entire narrative of the comics, which he has given to Blackman and his writers so, if they do overtake, they know where to take the show.

“He’s given me a really good idea to springboard to say where things are going and how they’ll be,” Blackman said.

“The goal is not to diverge. Not everything translates from the graphic novel page to the screen, but there’s a legion of fans and I want to bring in a whole new legion of fans who’ve never read the graphic novel, so the goal is not to just go off in our own direction. I like Gerard and Gabriel’s ideas so much, the goal is keep on trucking behind them, beside them. Things will deviate, but the goal is to try to be true to the source material.”

So, The Umbrella Academy season 2 might not drop for a long time, but somewhere out there is a document with ALL THE SECRETS for future seasons? They better have that document in a safe, buried 7 miles underground, guarded by a three-headed dog if they want to make sure the storyline doesn't leak.
