TikTok tests new layout that makes it look like Instagram

Now, it's not uncommon for social media platforms to borrow certain bits from each other. Instagram famously took Snapchat's entire model for their popular Instagram Stories feature, which was introduced in August 2016.

TikTok's new profile design moves user bios from the centre to the left (like Instagram) with avatars and follow count going over too. New York Times reporter Taylor Lorenz first spotted the changes and a TikTok spokesperson later confirmed the news in a statement to The Verge.

"We're always looking for ways to improve the user experience on TikTok," they said. "We are currently testing profile designs and functionality to ultimately give users more ways to personalize and engage with their profiles."

This comes after TikTok, which only launched in 2016, was declared the third most-downloaded app of 2019. The video-sharing app was only beaten by WhatsApp and Messenger, but it came ahead of Facebook and Instagram. TikTok – which is owned by ByteDance – is the only app that isn't owned by Facebook in the top five.
