Ian Somerhalder says he wants to direct an episode of 'Legacies'

The Vampire Diaries alum said that he thinks Legacies looks "amazing" and that he'd love to have a conversation with creator Julie Plec about directing an episode. Ian's Vampire Diaries castmate Paul Welsey directed a season 1 episode of Legacies.
Ian Somerhalder has been fulfilling our vampy television needs since 2009 when he first starred as Damon Salvatore in the CW's Vampire Diaries. He played Damon until the very end of the series in 2017 and fans have certainly missed Damon's bad boy shenanigans on the popular series. Ian returns to the vamp life for Netflix's V-Wars this December but, of course, fans still wonder whether the TVD fan favourite would ever head back to Mystic Falls, perhaps on Legacies.
Legacies on the CW follows the story of Hope Mikaelson, daughter of Originals hybrid Klaus, and her supernatural classmates. Characters from The Vampire Diaries and The Originals have already breezed into town to appear in the series but viewers want to know if Ian would ever show up as his iconic TVD character, Damon.
Entertainment Tonight caught up with the actor and asked him whether he could ever see himself getting involved with Legacies.
"I actually would love to talk to Jules. I would love to go and direct one of [the Legacies episodes]," he told the publication.
"Because I know Paul [Wesley] went to do it and he called me and he's like, 'Bro, this is f**king crazy.' Because it's all of our old sets, which is a time warp, 10 years ago. He's just going, 'Dude!' He was actually kind of emotional about it, he goes 'This is crazy!'"
He added: "We spent eight years on the show, and now it's two years later, which we're still talking about it while we're working on other things. That's a decade, 30 to 40. That's a very substantial piece of your life. But I would actually love to go back and direct one. I love what they are doing. The show looks amazing, it's all of my old team."
Paul Wesley, who played Stefan Salvatore, did direct season 1 episode 13 of Legacies and at the time he said revisiting everything gave him a sense of "deep nostalgia". However, he's happy enough with Stefan's ending.
Fans probably wanted to hear that Damon would consider making an appearance on Legacies (after all, the teens on the show attend the Salvatore school, named after Stefan and Damon). However, after eight seasons and every supernatural storyline imaginable, it's pretty clear that Ian is happy to contribute in a more behind-the-scenes way.
Meanwhile, Ian has got plenty of vampires to deal with on Netflix's V-Wars, which drops 6 December. The Vampire Diaries alum plays Dr. Luther Swann, a scientist who is pitted against his best friend after a genetic mutation begins to turn swathes of the population into deadly vampires.
