Good things come to those who wait…

Finally, some good news! Netflix have just confirmed that a long-awaited sequel to Chicken Run is coming to the streaming platform – and production will begin in 2021.

Netflix announced the cult movie's return on Tuesday (June 23), a whole 20 years after it was originally released.

They tweeted: "POULTRY NEWS: Exactly 20 years to the day since the original was released, we can confirm there will be a Chicken Run sequel coming to Netflix!! Produced by @aardman, production is expected to begin next year. Eggsellent."

Aardman Co-Founder and Creative Director, Peter Lord, said of the movie: "Fans around the world have waited patiently for a sequel idea worthy of Chicken Run so we're delighted to announce, on the 20th anniversary, that we've found the perfect story.

"Netflix feels like the ideal creative partner for this project too: they celebrate the film-maker, which means we can make the film we want to make – the one we really care about – and share it with a global audience."

Chicken Run followed the story of a group of chickens as they hatch an elaborate plan to escape from a Yorkshire farm, where they would ultimately end up becoming a meat pie. The movie ended with the chickens finally escaping the pie factory and finding utopia, and the sequel will pick up from there.

The synopsis reads: "Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy's farm, Ginger has finally found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world.

"But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk – this time, they're breaking in!"

Who will be in the Chicken Run 2 cast?

There's no word on if the original Chicken Run cast will be reprising their roles, but the sequel will include main characters like Ginger (Julia Sawalha) and Rocky (Mel Gibson).

This is going to be egg-cellent viewing (sorry…).
