The series will follow "the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one."

Percy Jackson fans, today is your lucky day. Seven years after the release of the second (and final) Percy Jackson film, it's now been confirmed that Disney+ is in the early stages of developing a brand new TV series based on the original novels.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians is finally set to get the full live-action book-to-screen adaptation it deserves at the streaming service, with involvement from author Rick Riordan and Becky Riordan too.

Announcing the news via a video posted to fans on Twitter, Riordan confirmed: "After a lot of hard work and lot of support from you guys, Percy Jackson is coming to Disney Plus!"

When is Percy Jackson coming to Disney+?

In a statement shared with fans, Riordan revealed that the live-action series will follow "the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one."

Details of a release date were not mentioned, as it sounds like the series is in the very early stages of development.

Riordan also assured fans that he and Becky would be involved with every aspect of the show.

That little nugget of info will make fans very happy to hear considering how vocal they (and Riordan) have been about how much they didn't like the film versions of the series.

Back in 2018, Riordan wrote a blog post revealing how disappointed he was that Percy was aged up in the films, the 'terrible script' and deviations from the original story.

As soon as the news broke, fans of the original book series began tweeting how excited they were about a brand new adaptation. And, of course, memes soon followed...

While there's been no further announcements regarding casting, Percy Jackson himself, Logan Lerman, threw his support behind the series and congratulated Riordan, writing: "Excited to see this! Hope it gets the adaptation the books deserve."
