'American Horror Story' Season 8: Theme, Release Date, Cast, Trailer And Everything You Need To Know
4 April 2018, 15:31
When will it air? Who will be in the cast? WHAT WILL THE THEME BE?
Roll up, roll up... production may not have even started yet on American Horror Story season 8 just yet but we do know a little bit of information regarding the cast and the potential theme - and if the latest rumour is true, it sounds like it could be a VERY interesting season.
So, what is the theme for the eight season? Fans online have uncovered a brand new trademark for "American Horror Story: Radioactive", which seems to have been filed by Fox. And rumours are circulating online that the season will be set in Arizona in 2032, after a nuclear blast. Interesting... very interesting.
And what about the confirmed cast members? It's just been announced that both Evan Peters and Kathy Bates will be returning for the eighth season, although (as always) their characters remain underwraps. Speaking to EW, Ryan Murphy confirmed that Evan and Kathy, alongside Sarah Paulson who had already been announced as a cast member will be "main characters". The legendary Dame Joan Collins has also been added to the cast after Murphy teased that he was lining up "big name guest stars".
So, now we have our first confirmed cast members of the season, what else do we know about the season?
What will the theme be?
So far, the theme for the eighth season has not been officially announced, but fans have been hard at work trying to uncover clues and they may have found a big one... A new trademark filed by Fox for "American Horror Story: Radioactive" has been found online and while it's still unconfirmed, fans on Reddit also pointed out that a similar trademark had been filed for Cult.
So what would a "Radioactive" season entail? Well, we could be looking at some kind of Chernobyl situation where a huge nuclear disaster occurs at some point in the future - it's certainly a topical subject after all. A season about nuclear fall out has long since been a popular theory with the fans and it would certainly tie into the mysteries surrounding Freak Show and Cult too, and maybe even Asylum. (There's still that huge plot point about Massimo testing atomic bombs for the US military in Freak Show that could be explored in more detail.)
Rumours are also circulating on Reddit and on Twitter that the show will be set in 2032, in Arizona after a nuclear blast. The tea allegedly came from someone working on the marketing side of things so for now, it remains a rumour but it does feel very very convincing.

According to a source AHS8 is titled “Radioactive”, and set in 2032 Arizona after a Nuclear blast. Dylan McDermott, Denis O’Hare, Adina Porter and Eddie Cibran are set to appear. News comes from @ahsnewsupdates on instagram. #AHS #AHS8 pic.twitter.com/EjcffZdLa5
While there has been no concrete theme, setting or time period announced yet, the show will take place in the future. Ryan Murphy, speaking at the 2018 TCAs, gave no further details but did manage to slip into the conversation that it WOULD NOT BE SET IN SPACE. Murphy teased, “All I’ll say about it is I want to go to the future — still topical, but the future, which I’ve never done. I pitched it to [FX chief] John Landgraf today right after his TCA panel, and he loved it, but he’s asked me not to say what it is. I told him and he fell out of his chair with joy. I think people will like it, it’s different from what we’ve done before, but I always try and do the opposite of what I’ve done on that show."
Murphy has stated that season eight will NOT have a mystery theme like Roanoke did. He has also stated that the audience will get to see the character and storyline connections "explode in seasons seven and eight," linking everything together in much more intricate way. We saw almost no connections to other seasons in AHS: Cult so whether his statement still rings true, we do not know.
Sarah Paulson also told Entertainment Weekly that Ryan Murphy already has a number of ideas in mind but hasn't officially decided yet: "I hope it’s the one I hope it is; let’s put I that way. I’ve heard more than one idea and there’s one in particular I really hope lands."
The season will NOT be the Murder House/Coven crossover season. That will be the theme for season 9.
When will season eight be released?
When discussing the earlier air date for AHS: Cult, Murphy revealed that he wanted the future seasons to wrap up before the holiday season 'cause he doesn't "want blood with [his] Christmas ornaments.” So, unless scheduling conflicts or a change of heart pushes the show back, we could be looking at another early September air date.
Who else will be in the cast?
The cast for AHS: Cult was VERY different to the classic roster for AHS. There's been a handful of big names that were noticeably absent from the season and a bunch of new faces that we've now come to know and love but who will be returning?
According to an interview with Ad Week, the iconic Sarah Paulson will be returning for the already renewed eighth season of AHS. So far, she is the only confirmed cast member. Fans worried that Evan Peters might not be part of the show because he's busy working on another Ryan Murphy project, Pose but it's since been confirmed that he will be back back back BACK AGAIN for another season. Kathy Bates will also return after one season away. The three of them will be the leads in this season.
"I mean, Sarah Paulson has done two shows for me that were shooting at the same time. Usually, with the actors, I think of a role and then go to them and they either want to do it or not, so I haven’t even talked to Evan about what the role might be, but I would hope so. I think so,” Murphy said about the possible clash.
Dame Joan Collins has also been added to the cast. No details about her role have been released.
Is there a trailer for season 8 yet?
Not yet. But we'll let you know when it drops.
