All the latest information about the cast, storyline, theories and trailers for Riverdale season 3.

It's official - Riverdale will be returning for a third season! Now that the second season of Riverdale has officially wrapped, many fans minds are starting to think about what could possibly happen in the third season of the show. We know Riverdale has been a massive hit and it's likely to be around for many more seasons, but what concrete details do we know about the next season?

The short answer is very little. But there are details we can speculate on with some accuracy. From the new relationships (*ahem* CHONI! FALICE! ROSIE!), to the ongoing mystery surrounding the real Black Hood (who will be returning at the end of season two)... there's a lot for the third season two unpack!

We'll be updating this article throughout the year when we get more information but, in the meantime, here's what we can predict so far.

Is Riverdale returning for a third season? Has it been confirmed?

Yes! Season three has officially been renewed by The CW and was confirmed via Deadline. Several cast members has already teased that Riverdale would be back for a third season. Skeet Ulrich (who plays FP Jones) revealed at RiverCon in Paris at the end of March that they'll be returning for season 3 and that shooting will begin in July.

The shows ratings for season 2 have been strong (up 58% from the first season) and show creator has just signed a deal with Netflix, who stream Riverdale outside the US, to develop a reboot of The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, which exists in the same universe so it was almost guaranteed that the show would return, it seems unstoppable at the moment.

When is Riverdale season 3 released?

The show is likely to return at the same time of year as the second season did. Last year the cast returned for filming season two in June and the show returned back on screens in October. Prepare your Halloween Riverdale parties asap.

What’s going to happen in Riverdale season 3?

Riverdale is, at it's heart, a crime noir drama. Both the first and the second seasons have had murders at the heart of their storylines so it's likely that the third season would follow this theme but in what capacity? We obviously won't know until the end of the second season where we're sure they'll be some cliffhangers.

The second season hasn't finished yet but the cast are already teasing what's ahead for their characters in the next season. Ulrich also mentioned that we could see Jellybean and Jughead's mum return to Riverdale which means we'll get to live Jughead's dream of finally having his family in one place... but that will also mean some juicy drama ahead for whatever is going on between Alice Cooper and FP.

A lot of new ships will probably be explored in season three. Cheryl and Toni's relationship will finally have a chance to *ahem* blossom... And we might finally get to see Kevin in a relationship too.

It's also been revealed that we will finally find out who the real Black Hood is so there'll obviously be repercussions for certain characters once the killer is unveiled.

Which characters will be in Riverdale season 3?

Unless The CW want to completely ruin their new juggernaut, you can definitely expect the core four of Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) to stay for season 3. Given the amount of untimely deaths in the show, the other characters aren't so safe.

Other main characters and actors that will likely be returning are: Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), Casey Cott (Kevin Keller), Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick), FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich), Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols), Fred Andrews (Luke Perry), Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) and Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos)... unless his character gets mysteriously bumped off at the end of the season.

Recurring characters such as Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) and Polly Cooper (Tiera Skovbye) will probably also return. But as for the rest? Who truly knows in Riverdale?

Have they started filming Riverdale season 3 yet?

Not yet, they're currently on hiatus after wrapping season two but various cast members have teased that filming will begin around July.

How many episodes will there be in Riverdale season 3?

Season 2 had 22 so it's likely that season three will have roughly the same amount.

Will Riverdale cross over with Sabrina in season three?

Ah, the million dollar question. Rumours of the two worlds crossing over have been rife ever since the first season. Now that Sabrina production is in full swing, and with a new show to promote, we wouldn't be surprised if Netflix arranged for a crossover to happen.

But by the looks of things, the two shows will remain completely separate. In fact, we're not even sure that they exist in the same world. So far, there are no plans to include Sabrina on Riverdale. Instead of a backdoor pilot within the show, Sabrina will be getting her OWN pilot episode. The show will not be a "spin-off" of Riverdale either, it'll be a stand alone show.

In an interview with Vulture, Lili Reinhart appeared to confirm that Sabrina will not exist within the same universe as Riverdale, and that Betty will never make appearance on the Netflix show.

"I think Betty’s solely in the Riverdale world and it doesn’t make sense for a crossover. That’s why the decision was ultimately made to move to Netflix — to make these Riverdale and Sabrina shows completely separate universes."
