29 August 2018, 20:52 | Updated: 29 August 2018, 21:05
All the latest information about the cast, storyline, theories and trailers for Riverdale season 3.
It's official - Riverdale will be returning for a third season and there's already so much news and so many spoilers out there to feast your eyes on. Now that season two of Riverdale is finally over, word on the street is that the third season of the show will take on a completely different tone and genre. There's gonna be less murder and more focus on the friendships and relationships too... apparently.
The latest news? The first full length trailer for the third season has dropped and a LOT of stuff happens. Here's a quick rundown of everything you need to know:
- Archie is off to jail. SAD!
- The gang spend the last of Archie's days before his trial having fun down by the river.
- Betty and Jughead have a lil smooch by a fire.
- Cheryl, Veronica and Toni go on a little heist. #Oceans3
- Archie has a serpent tattoo. Yikes!
- FALICE IS HAPPENING.
- The Vixens are back, and better than ever.
- Betty faints!
- There's some creepy twig monsters lurking around and it looks vv much like AHS: Roanoke.
- Jughead discovers a weird ritual set up happening in the woods.
The will also be a time-jump when we return to Riverdale. Season three will start on Labor Day weekend which is at the beginning of September and the kids will finally be become high school juniors. There's been chatter from RAS about them actually sitting down and focusing on their school work but we'll believe it when we see it.
In other news, in addition to Jughead's mother (who could be played by Pretty Little Liars and Charmed alum Holly Marie Combs), and his little sister Jellybean, two new characters will be joining the cast in major recurring roles. Father/daughter duo Edgar and Evelyn Evernever will be arriving in town and will feature heavily in the Cooper storyline. Edgar is a "new age health-guru" who helps Alice cope with what she went through in season two, and the "otherworldy" Evelyn befriends Betty. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, tbh.
Oh, and if you're looking for any clues toward's season three's plot, show-runner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has hinted that we should "look back at episode seven of this season [two]..." (Are we finally getting to the bottom of the Penny Peabody saga?!)
So - what can we expect in season three of our favourite show? From the new relationships (*ahem* CHONI! FALICE! ROSIE!), to the ongoing mystery surrounding Hiram's new gang of villains (Penny Peabody, Penelope Blossom, Claudius Blossom, Malachai and Sheriff Minetta), there's a lot for the third season to unpack!
We'll be updating this article throughout the year when we get more information but, in the meantime, here's what we know so far:
Is Riverdale returning for a third season? Has it been confirmed?
Yes! Season three has officially been renewed by The CW and was confirmed via Deadline. Several cast members had already teased that Riverdale would be back for a third season. Skeet Ulrich (who plays FP Jones) revealed at RiverCon in Paris at the end of March that they'll be returning for season 3 and that shooting will begin in July.
The shows ratings for season 2 have been strong (up 58% from the first season) and show creator has just signed a deal with Netflix, who stream Riverdale outside the US, to develop a reboot of The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, which exists within the same Archie Comics universe. The whole franchise seems unstoppable at the minute.
When is Riverdale season 3 released?
Riverdale will return to our screens on October 10th, 2018, one week earlier than the release of season two.
It will air in its usual time-slot at 8/7c on The CW.
How many episodes will be in Riverdale season 3?
There will reportedly be 23 episodes in the third season of the show - one more than season two.
What’s going to happen in Riverdale season 3?
First things first, our main character Archie has been arrested and is facing charges for the murder of Cassidy Bullock. We know he didn't do it, but with Hiram in control of the Sheriff's office and now the Mayor's office, it's gonna be a tough one for him to escape from. That storyline will be one of the main conflicts of the season.
Jughead's mother and sister have been continually referenced in the show and it looks like we'll be getting to meet them in season three. That means we'll finally get to live Juggie's dream of finally having his entire family in one place... and will also mean some juicy drama ahead for whatever may or may not happen between Alice Cooper and FP Jones.
Talking of Falice, the mystery of their REAL son is currently still unsolved. Chic, who was identified as an imposter, says that the real Charles is dead but as we all know on Riverdale, no one is officially dead until we see the body. While the show is unlikely to explore the same storyline for a second time, his existence and/or eventual appearance will probably pop up at some point in season three.
With the introduction of the mysterious and suspicious (potential cult leader) Edgar Evernever and his daughter Evelyn, it sounds like the vulnerable Alice might find herself with a potential new love interest and also in a bit of danger.
A lot of new ships will probably be explored in season three too. Cheryl and Toni's relationship will finally have a chance to *ahem* blossom... And we might finally get to see Kevin in a relationship with Moose too. In the finale, it looked like Josie and Reggie were finally gonna get together too. As for the core four? Maybe a little shake up might be in order?
We'll also get to see how the town's new mayor handles things in season three. Will Hermione go into office with a clean record or will she succumb to Hiram's demands and play dirty?
Now that the Black Hood's identity has been revealed (well, well, well, Hal Cooper), we'll probably be seeing the fall out and repercussions of his confession for Alice and Betty come season three. It's been confirmed by Aguirre-Sacasa and Lochlyn Munro that Hal will be sticking around in season three and he will have a juicy storyline.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about Hal's role in season 3, he says: "Roberto came up to me and adamantly said, “No, it’s not over [for] Hal. We have a whole different story arc planned for that.” I’m really excited to see what they come up with, so I can really jump into it. Because I now have really embraced this situation with him, and I want to see why he became the guy he is. It gives me more to do, and I look forward to it."
It's also been said there will be a wedding between two parents in the third season. Speaking at the TCA "Meet The Parents" panel on Aug 6, It was revealed that Sheriff Keller and Sierra McCoy might actually be tying the knot this season!
Will there be a time jump?
Yes! It sounds like a few months will have passed by the time we head back to Riverdale. Confirmed by staff writer Britta Lundin on Tumblr, the show will pick up on Labor Day weekend, which is in September.
Judging by the sneak peak on the cover of the production script for episode one, it looks like a few months has passed and Archie's murder trial will finally be underway. Another hint that suggests a time jump lies in the character description for Edgar Evernever. It says he's "a new-age health “guru” who HAS HELPED Alice get her life together after the events of season two", suggesting that he's been around for while already. Judging by the on-set picture shared by Mädchen Amick, it looks like Alice's new spiritual era is in full effect already.
The series picking back up in September also means the squad will be starting season 3 a new school year. However, it does also mean we'll probably miss a lot of "firsts" with Cheryl and Toni and Kevin and Moose over the summer.
Which characters will be in Riverdale season 3?
Unless The CW want to completely ruin their new juggernaut, you can definitely expect the core four of Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) to stay for season 3. Given the amount of untimely deaths in the show, the other characters aren't so safe.
Other main characters and actors that will likely be returning are: Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), Kevin Keller (Casey Cott), Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick), FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich), Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols), Fred Andrews (Luke Perry), Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) and Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos).
Vanessa Morgan and Charles Melton have both been upgraded to series regulars which means we'll also be seeing more of both Toni Topaz and Reggie Mantle.
Recurring characters such as Polly Cooper (Tiera Skovbye), Ethel Muggs (Shannon Purser), Sweetpea (Jordan Connor) and Chuck Clayton (Jordan Calloway) will probably also return. As will Lochlyn Munro as the serial killer Hal Cooper. Looks like we haven't seen the end of the Black Hood storyline just yet...
Hart Denton has also been confirmed as a returning cast member by his (fake) on-screen mum, Mädchen Amick - so we guess it looks like Chic is not done with the Cooper family just yet... Speaking at an event on May 22, Amick said: "I'm sure you're all aware of [Denton's] creepy portrayal of the Cooper son and I can't wait to see what he's gonna be up to season three... SPOILER ALERT!" We guess he's alive and managed to escape the Black Hood in one piece then, huh?
What are the season three episode titles?
Here are all the episode titles we know so far:
Episode 1 - "Chapter Thirty-Six: Labor Day"
Episode 2 - "Chapter Thirty-Seven: Fortune And Men's Eyes"
Episode 3 - "As Above, So Below"
Have they started filming Riverdale season 3 yet?
Yes! The cast arrived back in Vancouver on Friday July 6th and the first table read of the new season was held.
Will Riverdale cross over with Sabrina in season three?
Ah, the million dollar question. Rumours of the two worlds crossing over have been rife ever since the first season. Now that Sabrina production is in full swing, and with a new show to promote, we wouldn't be surprised if Netflix arranged for a crossover to happen.
But by the looks of things, the two shows will remain completely separate. In fact, we're not even sure that they exist in the same world. So far, there are no plans to include Sabrina on Riverdale. Instead of a backdoor pilot within the show, Sabrina will be getting her OWN pilot episode. The show will not be a "spin-off" of Riverdale either, it'll be a stand alone show.
In an interview with Vulture, Lili Reinhart appeared to confirm that Sabrina will not exist within the same universe as Riverdale, and that Betty will never make appearance on the Netflix show.
"I think Betty’s solely in the Riverdale world and it doesn’t make sense for a crossover. That’s why the decision was ultimately made to move to Netflix — to make these Riverdale and Sabrina shows completely separate universes."
